Seminar explores national reading and cultural heritage

The "National Reading and Cultural Inheritance: 2025 Chinese and Foreign Reading Conference" and the Fourth Academic Symposium was held from May 16 to 18 at Northwestern Polytechnical University in Xi’an, Shaanxi province.

Over 100 educators and students from 36 research institutions and 3 primary and secondary schools spanning 14 provincial-level regions nationwide participated in the event.

Focused on the theme of "National Reading and Cultural Inheritance," the seminar delved into the profound significance of reading in fostering the legacy of human civilization. It underscored the enduring power of reading as a conduit for personal growth and societal advancement, emphasizing that collective reading initiatives can spark a national cultural renaissance. 

Organized by the Chinese Foreign Reading Research Committee of the China Association for Comparative Study of English and Chinese, in collaboration with the National Reading Education Research Institute of Renmin University of China and Beijing Jiayin Shunda Data Technology Co., Ltd., the event was supported by the Development Planning Office and the School of Foreign Languages at Northwestern Polytechnical University. 

Gathering renowned experts, scholars, cultural practitioners, and avid readers from both domestic and international spheres, the conference focused on how national reading can effectively preserve and transmit cultural essence amidst globalization and digitization, as well as how it can rejuvenate in the modern age.

Throughout the two-day gathering, participants engaged in keynote speeches, graduate student forums, and book exchanges featuring on-site signings and giveaways.

Lyu Weidong remarked that the conference at Northwestern Polytechnical University marked a pivotal moment in breaking disciplinary boundaries, empowering cultural initiatives, and facilitating cross-cultural dialogue. The event's success underscored the pivotal role of reading in cultural preservation and global discourse, fostering deeper integration between national reading practices and academic research while infusing fresh energy into cultural exchanges between China and other nations.
