The inauguration ceremony of the "Everest Plan" and the Intelligent Future, of Top-notch Innovative Talent Training Forum was held on October 23 at Xi'an Jiaotong University in Xi'an, Shaanxi province in Northwest China.
The launch ceremony and forum are held on Wednesday at the university.
Ding Zhaozhong, a Nobel laureate in physics and professor at MIT, along with 15 academicians from both on and off campus, have been appointed as consultant experts for the Everest Plan.
Since its relocation from Shanghai to Xi'an between 1955-1959, Xi'an Jiaotong University has firmly established itself in the western region, contributing significantly to the development of the region and the nation.
In recent years, leveraging the Western China Science and Technology Innovation Port, the university has initiated the "Integration of Industry and Education, Collaborative Education" innovation project to nurture innovative talents for major scientific research endeavors.
According to Zhang Liqun, an academician of the CAE and the president of Xi'an Jiaotong University, the university has introduced the "Everest Plan" (a comprehensive reform pilot class) to develop a five-element innovative talent training model. This model focuses on teaching students according to their strengths, guided by renowned educators, centered on pivotal topics, selecting exceptional students, and fostering significant achievements. This initiative lays a strong foundation for enhancing the quality of independent talent training and supporting the high-quality development of the university.

Through the "teacher-student two-way selection" on campus, 21 pairs of teachers and students successfully formed teams on that day, becoming the first "Everest Plan" teacher-student team.
The "Everest Plan" teacher-student teams receive appointment letters from Bie Chaohong, a member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and executive vice president of Xi'an Jiaotong University, along with books from their assigned mentors.
At the ceremony, Zhang Liqun and Ding Zhaozhong sign a cooperation agreement for the joint training of doctoral students by Xi'an Jiaotong University and Ding Zhaozhong's AMS laboratory.
The unveiling of the AMS Studio at the Modern Physics Research Center at Xi'an Jiaotong University is a highlight of the event.
In his address, Ding Zhaozhong advised the university's faculty and students not to blindly follow expert opinions, emphasizing the importance of designing precise and multi-measurement instruments for physics experiments. He encouraged students to have confidence in their own ideas, stay true to their interests, and be prepared for unexpected phenomena.

China Daily reported that Xi'an Jiaotong University officially established the "Everest Plan" (Comprehensive Reform Experimental Class) in 2024, guided by scientific challenges and national priorities. In the next 5-10 years, this plan aims to cultivate top-notch innovative talents by fostering a collaborative learning environment between teachers and students, offering a comprehensive training model from undergraduate to doctoral studies, personalized talent development strategies, and project-driven approaches to drive innovation in the field of internal medicine globally. The goal is to nurture scientific and technological innovation leaders who can make significant breakthroughs, wield international influence, lead future advancements, and contribute to the progress of human civilization.
