Forum focuses on ecological protection and sustainable development of Yellow River Basin

The prestigious High-end Forum on Ecological Protection and High-quality Development Strategies of the Yellow River Basin convened on September 18 in Xi’an, nestled in the heart of Shaanxi province in Northwest China.

Commemorating the fifth anniversary of the pivotal national strategy for ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River basin, the forum was a collaborative effort between Chang'an University and the Institute of Earth Environment at the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The forum’s opening ceremony is held on Sept 18 at Chang'an University headquartered in Xi’an.

The grand opening ceremony took place at Chang'an University's headquarters in Xi’an, setting the stage for a deep dive into the critical national imperatives concerning ecological preservation and sustainable growth within the Yellow River Basin. Topics of discussion ranged from the geological and geomorphological evolution of the basin to ecological barrier structures, water resources, disaster management, water quality, human impact on the environment, high-quality development, cultural heritage, and more, all aimed at enriching the discourse on the basin's ecological future.

Fourteen experts delivered insightful and forward-thinking academic presentations, shedding light on the strategic direction for the forum's theme.

In his inaugural address, Sha Aimin, the esteemed president of Chang'an University, highlighted the institution's proactive stance towards advancing the national agenda for ecological protection and high-quality development in the Yellow River Basin. Noteworthy initiatives such as the establishment of the Shaanxi Yellow River Science Research Institute and the pioneering "Livable Yellow River Scientific Research Plan," spearheaded by academician Peng Jianbing, underscore Chang'an University's commitment to addressing ecological, water resource, geological, and environmental challenges in the Loess Plateau region. Through years of dedicated effort, a robust scientific framework for a "livable Yellow River" has taken shape, offering sustainable solutions and bolstering the basin's ecological integrity and development.

Academician An Zhisheng, a distinguished member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, emphasized the imperative of adopting a holistic Earth system perspective. He underscored the significance of understanding the intricate interplay between natural processes and human interventions within the broader context of Western China and East Asia. By emphasizing the symbiotic relationship between human activities and natural systems, An Zhisheng advocated for a harmonious and coordinated approach towards achieving high-quality development in the Yellow River Basin.

The forum stands as a beacon of collaboration and knowledge exchange, paving the way for a sustainable and thriving future for the Yellow River Basin.
