Tianjin University champions of Chinese Debate World Cup

Tianjin University won the championship of the Chinese Debate World Cup against the University of Melbourne, Australia, in the online final held on August 19, becoming the only team to have topped the competition twice, having won the first championship back in 2017.

The Chinese Debate World Cup, formerly known as the "Debate Golden League", has become one of the most influential debate events in the world. In April, the 2021 Chinese Debate World Cup initiated its qualifying match worldwide. Forty-eight teams from of nearly 1,000 universities in China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and other countries entered the finals after more than half-a-year of pre-competitions and play-offs.

Tianjin University went through two rounds of 16 competitions to reach the final, before winning the championship having withstood the challenges of six daunting components from the University of Oxford, GuangXi University for Nationalities, Peking University, Nanchang University, Fudan University, and the University of Melbourne.

Tang Long, Leader of TJU’s debate team and a junior student from the university’s School of Education, attributed their success to the diligent and unswerving efforts exhibited by his teammates have through daily practice. Whereas Sun Chaoran, another team member, thought that courses, such as one on Debate and Eloquence and Communication Skills, and various debating activities provided by the university made their debating dreams come true.
