Golden College, an all-media education platform that is specially designed for those aged above 50, was launched in Shanghai on Monday.

Co-launched by Shanghai Education Commission, Shanghai Media Group and Oriental Pearl Group Co Ltd, the platform is available on both cable TV and IPTV channels and contains nearly 1,000 courses provided by Shanghai University.

According to the demands and viewing preferences of the elderly, the platform is divided into three themes - intelligent life, cultural entertainment, and health science education. The channels will be broadcast daily from 9 am to midnight.

Shanghai is one of the fastest-aging cities in the nation. To meet the increasing demand for elderly education, the city now has four city-level, 18 district-level and 221 street and town level universities for the elderly, as well as another 5,589 neighborhood committee learning centers.

"With the rapid development of information technology, the education model of the elderly has changed, especially during these pandemic times. Golden College integrates high-quality courses of various institutions and platforms so that the elderly can enjoy learning at home," said Ni Minjing, deputy director of the Shanghai Education Commission.
